The Trakehner Horse: A Legacy of Resilience
The Trakehner is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most noble warmblood horse breeds in the world. Originally developed in 1732 at the Royal Trakehnen Stud in East Prussia, this breed was refined through the centuries to produce a horse of exceptional athleticism, intelligence, and elegance. Today, it is famous for its characteristic "floating trot" and a temperament that combines sensitivity with an enduring spirit.

A History Forged in Fire
The survival of the Trakehner breed is a testament to its legendary resilience. During World War I, the breed faced its first major threat, as the demands of the cavalry and the destruction of the conflict nearly wiped out the population. However, dedicated breeders managed to stabilize the numbers in the interwar years.
The greatest tragedy occurred during World War II. In the bitter winter of 1945, as the Soviet army advanced, the East Prussian people and their horses began the "Great Trek." Over 800 miles of frozen terrain were covered, including a perilous crossing of the frozen Frisches Haff lagoon. Thousands of horses perished from exhaustion, starvation, and enemy fire. Out of the original population of approximately 25,000 registered horses, fewer than 1,000 survived the trek to reach West Germany. It is from these few survivors that the modern Trakehner breed was painstakingly rebuilt.

We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our breeding program. Mayland Stud has been given the opportunity to add two beautiful "pink papered" Trakehner broodmares to our family. In the world of the Trakehner Verband, pink papers represent the highest tier of registration, signifying that the horses are purebred with a documented ancestry that meets the strictest quality and pedigree requirements.
These two mares bring exceptional bloodlines and the classic Trakehner type to Mayland Stud, and we look forward to the incredible contributions they will make to our future foals.
